Adventure
“You have a big adventure planned, but then with college you accumulate debt that you can’t pay off until into your twenties. And by then your married, and you have to pay for a house, and then kids, and you have to work to put them through college, and soon it’s late in your life, and it’s gone by without the great adventure you had planned.”

It is sadly true. I am trying my best to avoid that college debt part and have been successful thus far, but I am rather certain I won’t hold out all four years!
You said: So, your response to people as of now is “there is not proof that God exists.” To clarify why you don’t believe in God, what do you count as or consider to be the “proof” that you set as the standard for your belief in God?
I think I hold the same standards as Agnostics_R_US. Check it out: Theistic Standards Part 1 and 22
It would have to be obvious. I think Richard Carrier expands this point here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6FQdyHUXwc
Tell me if this isn’t satisfying or if there is anything wrong with anything.
“It would have to be obvious.” It: God’s existence…
amen roy.
teehee Roy. I suppose we best make the most of our time before college and get in our adventure! or perhaps the real adventure is living, debt and all, with Christ as our guide.
That’s exactly what i’ve been telling my friends, and it’s begun to piss me off that no one wants to sacrifice anything like i do in orer to make the big adventure happen. Oh well. I’m going to Africa for a year next May though, with an american organization to work with AIDS Orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa. I think that’s exciting.. and for some reason other people seem to keep saying things like “i’m so jealous!” and yet, they still won’t give things up in order to do the same thing.. or something similar. Weird.
Do you have waffles every friday at Roy’s?
That makes me jealous. I wish my neighbours were that awesome
The clear, obvious answer here is to not go to college!
“Uganda, Egypt, and Sudan”
Those are the three countries, including Botswana! That I’m longing to go to! But then again I’m also longing to visit Mali, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Ethiopia, Senegal and Morocco! Oh Africa is so incredible! I lived in Ghana, West Africa for 6 months in 2004, West Africa is phenomenal! One great part about living in Africa long enough is that you can recognize that not all African’s sound the same. Depending on what part of Africa they’re from their accent is different, and i think that, that is so neat, because not too many people know that!
I’ve been wanting to learn French, Swahili, and/or Arabic… i’m not sure if any of them will ever happen, but it’s possible!
It would be amazing if you learned Arabic!!

Before I respond to your comment, I have to give a kudos to this quote! Your neighbor has hit the nail on its head. While I’m not anti-college, I am anti-life-wasting. So many of my peers went off to college and lost four years of their life, returning with little more than warped worldviews, a degree they don’t know how to use, and a lot of debt. Your neighbor has an excellent point.
Onto your comment (which I felt I had to respond to): you have no idea how much girls struggle with this. For you, it’s very simple to say (if you were a girl) you’d be an ultra-modest one. For girls, it’s not quite that easy. See, a girl defines her worth by how many guys give her attention (I’m not saying it’s right; I’m just saying that we do). When an immodestly dressed girl walks in the room, everyone looks (and the noble ones immediately look away). When a modestly dressed girl walks in the room, less (if anyone) seems to notice.
To be quite honest, there often doesn’t seem to be any reward to dress modestly. As Christians, girls struggle with the line between looking attractive and becoming immodest. There’s always a temptation to go ahead and wear that particular skirt, top, etc. simply because they know they’ll get more attention.
That is why it’s so encouraging for us to read things like this survey. It’s a reminder that guys really do notice girls that are dressed modestly.
Do your female friends a favor: the next time you notice they took extra care to dress modestly, tell them they look great. Trust me – you’ll make their day!
mmm waffles
….if you then go on to graduate school, you will probably be well into your thirties before you get the debt paid off. Our educational debtload was finally paid off a year ago.
We now have four teens, three pets and we are determined to make every day of life an adventure. (Adventure comes pretty naturally when the well-educated one goes insane for a summer…) Last year we drove across the country and camped in tents when we slept. We took the dog with us! THAT is adventure, baby!
When my kids dream and plan about their future I remind them to do everything they can to avoid debt. Life will be much more fun if your haven’t accumulated crippling debt while preparing for your life.
But life…living it …that is just as much of an adventure..as taking a hike up mount everest. I think it depends on the perception you have when viewing your life. For my life is full of adventure because each day brings a new dawn with new possibilities and new faces. I cant wait until tomorrow!
Your neighbor seems like a wonderful man.
Have a good night.
