  • The Pursuit of Truth

Socrates:  How is your search for the truth going?
American:  Um, my search for … the truth?
Socrates: Yes, aren’t you looking for it?
    American:  No, I’m not.
Socrates:  Well then what are you looking for?
American:  I’m not looking for anything.
Socrates:  Ah, so you have already found it?
American:  No, I haven’t found anything.
Socrates:  Well, if you aren’t looking and you haven’t found anything, then what do you have?
American:  Well, my life, I suppose.
Socrates:  So you have your life, but you do not have the truth neither are you looking for it? Don’t you think the truth might pertain to your life?
American:  No, I don’t think so.  It doesn’t seem to be an issue of large concern to anyone.
    Socrates:  Have you asked it?
American:  Well, no, I haven’t asked it.
Socrates:  Because you haven’t found it, right?
    American:  Right.
Socrates:  So maybe you should find it and ask it just to make sure.
American:  Perhaps.  But what if I don’t want to look for the truth?
Socrates:  Why wouldn’t you want to?
American:  Well, I have a good life.
Socrates:  But don’t you want to know
American:  I don’t know if I want to know.  It depends on what the truth is.
Socrates:  Well, then it seems like you should take the risk to look for the truth in case that once you find it, you discover that you wanted to know it all along.

  • That’s good.  That’s really good.  And it’s what I needed to hear. :) I am far too American.

  • Can I just say how much I loved this? I loooooooooove it. Thank you for posting it. I needed to read this.

  • Everyone should read this.

  • *smile*

Hmm.  I’m trying to remember how I met you.  I read your posts when they come across my subscriptions with undeniable interest.  You’re a great writer, and you actually have profound things to say (as opposed to the majority of the xangas to which I subscribe).  I enjoy reading your stuff.  But a question.  Hah, do I actually know you?  You live in Ohio (as do I for at least two more weeks… school’s almost done), so perhaps I do?  *terribly confused*

In any case, have a lovely day!

  • heh. good point. the only problem is that its true.

personally i would rather not ignore something that may have enormous effects on my life- no matter if its for the better or worse- because id rather be miserable and know it so i can change it versus ignorant with a wake up call in store.

thank you for the thought evoking.

  • hey we talked today for the first time in a while, where are you goin to college? what’s been happenin in the life of philip? anything exciting? well lemme know.

    later,
    todd.

  • On Coldplay: Yes, no offense intended, but I view X&Y as boring pretentious garbage.

Comment on the post: it’s kind of like the question “what do you want?” For a long time that question haunted me, I didn’t have an answer I liked for years. The answer I had was selfish and I knew the truth of my desires, but didn’t know what to do with them. It took years for me to figure out what I really wanted and discovered I actually desire it. Since then I have decided to always have an answer to any question even if the answer is a statement of my lack of knowledge.

I don’t blame people for not wanting to know the truth though. It’s a tough thing to handle.

  • Let’s make a deal. If you update, I’ll update. Sound fair?

See at tomorrow at two. Looking super forward to panera and prom :)
